FRESH AND EFFICIENT
Packhouse Operations
The Howbill packhouse operates year-round, ensuring that fruit is packed, cooled, and dispatched efficiently. Managed by Dawie Bester and his experienced team, the facility plays a vital role in delivering high-quality produce to both local and international markets.
Established in 1979, the Howbill packhouse was one of the first on-farm packing and cold storage facilities in the Koue Bokkeveld. Before its construction, all fruit had to be transported to Ceres for processing. Today, the packhouse processes approximately 450 bins of fruit per day and operates almost the entire year, pausing only for a summer break.
HOWBILL COOLING
Cooling & Storage
Howbill Farming utilises Controlled Atmosphere (CA) and Regulated Atmosphere (RA) cooling to preserve fruit quality and extend shelf life.
Controlled Atmosphere (CA) Storage
Used for long-term storage (44,400 crates). Temperature, carbon monoxide, and oxygen levels are carefully regulated to reduce transpiration, keeping fruit fresh for months.
Regulated Atmosphere (RA) Storage
Designed for short-term storage (8,800 crates). These rooms maintain a controlled temperature to store fruit destined for immediate packing, typically for local markets.
